The backlight can be set to Auto, which adjusts based on the light sensor, or to a preset brightness percentage (in values 10-100%).
This setting is specific to each activity profile, allowing you to configure custom settings for indoor versus outdoor riding and various other conditions. You can change this setting under Settings > Backlight.
The backlight setting can also be accessed from the Shortcuts menu.
